Dangote Refinery has successfully closed its landmark IPO, attracting investors from 120 countries including all 54 African nations, making it one of the most globally subscribed offerings in African capital market history.

The offer, branded “The People’s IPO”, put 4.1 billion ordinary shares on the market at N525 each, a proposed raise of about N2.15 trillion.

The company framed the geographic spread as the main result, saying the sale pulled retail and institutional buyers across borders in a way African capital markets rarely manage.

African exchanges have long been split along national lines, with separate regulators, currencies and rules, and retail participation in large deals has been thin.

Dangote said a network of commercial banks, stockbrokers, fintech platforms and other capital market institutions opened the offer to investors in markets that would normally have been out of reach.

Dangote said the company did not pursue the listing only to raise money but also to give ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to participate in a global enterprise.

The offer opened on September 14 and was due to close on October 13. The Securities and Exchange Commission approved an extension to October 27, giving investors in Africa and elsewhere two more weeks to apply.

Murat Erden, group chief financial officer of Dangote Industries, pointed to the company’s recent results.
The refinery posted $22.5 billion in revenue and $5.52 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation in the first nine months of 2026, he said.

“With $22.5 billion in revenue and $5.52 billion in EBITDA in the first nine months of 2026, Dangote Refinery combines world-class industrial scale, strong profitability and significant long-term growth potential,” Erden added.

Digital platforms did much of the work of reaching investors. The company said partnerships between traditional financial institutions and technology-driven investment platforms created several routes for eligible investors to register interest and submit applications.

That setup let people in smaller markets take part without a local broker or a physical presence in Nigeria.
The refinery is pursuing an expansion of its refining and petrochemical operations and plans to strengthen its distribution network.

Dangote said the work falls under a “Vision 2030” strategy. The facility is meant to cut Africa’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products by building domestic processing capacity, and the company says it will support wider energy security across the continent. Dangote tied the offering to that longer plan.

“Our ambition is not merely to build successful businesses,” he said. “It is to help build a prosperous, self-reliant Africa whose people are participants in its economic destiny,” Erden said he expected the deal to be remembered as a template.

“We believe the People’s IPO will be remembered not only as a landmark transaction in African capital market history but also as a blueprint for a more inclusive, interconnected and globally competitive African financial ecosystem,” he said.
