The International Press Institute Nigeria, IPI, will examine the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism, including the spread of deepfakes and misinformation, at its 2026 conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja.
The two-day event, themed “Truth Under Pressure: Journalism, AI and Information Integrity,” will hold on December 2 and 3 at Bolton White Hotel, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.
The organization said the conference would address emerging challenges facing the Nigerian media, including disinformation, press freedom and journalist safety.
The gathering will also explore how newsrooms can use AI-powered verification tools and transparent fact-checking processes to identify and counter misinformation.
Participants are expected to include policymakers, media executives, journalists, subject-matter experts and media freedom advocates.
Discussions will examine how AI-generated deepfakes and other forms of synthetic media could undermine public trust in journalism, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
IPI Nigeria President Musikilu Mojeed said the conference would provide an opportunity to examine how journalists could deploy AI tools responsibly while protecting the accuracy and integrity of their reporting.

Mojeed said the event would also assess the state of media freedom and journalist safety in Nigeria, alongside policy and legal reforms needed to strengthen independent journalism.
He added that the conference would promote constructive engagement between the media and government on transparency and accountability, while encouraging participants to share international perspectives and best practices for protecting press freedom.
Strengthening cooperation between media organisations and security agencies will also feature among the conference discussions.
The event will include the induction of new members into IPI Nigeria, expanding the organisation’s network and supporting its work to defend press freedom and promote responsible journalism.
The second day, December 3, will be dedicated to the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, an exclusive session for members.
The AGM will review reports from the Executive Committee, assess the organisation’s activities and strategic direction, and consider new initiatives and partnerships aimed at improving press freedom and journalist safety in Nigeria.
Founded in 1950, IPI is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists spanning more than 100 countries. The organisation has spent more than seven decades advocating for press freedom and independent journalism worldwide.
