The Plateau State Government has firmly denied circulating rumours alleging that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Young Progressives Party.
The administration described the reports as malicious, unfounded, and deliberately crafted to mislead the public amid ongoing political tensions in the state.
The clarification was issued in a strongly worded statement on Friday by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Dr. Gyang Bere, who said the claims were nothing more than “a blatant lie and a shameless concoction peddled by desperate mischief makers.”
He noted that those behind the falsehood were intent on creating confusion, distracting the public, and undermining the governor’s steady progress in governance.
According to the government, Governor Mutfwang remains fully committed to his mandate under the Peoples Democratic Party and has not held discussions or initiated any action suggesting a move to another political platform.
“Governor Mutfwang has not defected to the Young Progressives Party or any other political party,” Bere said. “Should there ever be a change in his political affiliation, the public will be informed through official and verified communication channels.”
The government urged residents, supporters, and stakeholders across Plateau State to ignore the rumour in its entirety and remain focused on the administration’s development priorities.

It emphasised that those spreading the misinformation were attempting to distract the government from ongoing people-centered projects and reforms aimed at strengthening economic growth, infrastructure, and security.
“We encourage citizens to remain vigilant and united in advancing the Plateau project,” the statement added. “Under Governor Mutfwang’s purposeful and visionary leadership, the state remains safe, stable, and steadily rising—brighter, stronger, and more resilient.”
Political observers note that speculation about Mutfwang’s alleged defection has lingered for months, particularly among some members of the All Progressives Congress.
While a few APC stakeholders have welcomed the rumour as an opportunity to gain political advantage, others dismissed it as implausible.
For the second time in recent weeks, Governor Mutfwang has publicly reiterated that he remains in the PDP and has no intention of switching parties.
The government maintained that the false report was part of a broader pattern of politically motivated misinformation aimed at creating doubt around the governor’s loyalty to his party.
It assured the public that such attempts would not derail the administration’s focus on service delivery.
With Friday’s clarification, the Plateau government hopes to lay the matter to rest and redirect public attention to ongoing reforms and development programmes across the state.
