Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha has regained freedom after the Court of Appeal set aside the judgment that sent him to prison for sexually assaulting a minor.

The actor, arrested in 2021, was handed a 16-year sentence by the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in July 2022 after he was found guilty on several counts linked to the molestation of a 14-year-old girl.

The case sparked nationwide debate, drawing strong reactions from child-rights advocates, industry figures and the general public.

A video circulated on Thursday showed Baba Ijesha sitting inside a vehicle moments after stepping out of custody.

Appearing relieved, he spoke briefly in Yoruba during a phone call, saying he had just been released and wanted time to rest while expressing gratitude to those who stood by him.

Actor and activist Yomi Fabiyi, who has been vocal throughout the legal battle, confirmed the development and described the judgment as a significant correction of what he insisted was a mishandled case.

He said the Appeal Court’s ruling “clears” the actor and urged restraint in discussing sensitive allegations, stressing that fairness must guide public conversations.

Fabiyi added that the years of litigation underscore the need to uphold due process and protect the rights of all parties, especially in cases involving minors. He also maintained his stance against abuse in any form.

Legal sources stated that the Appeal Court found the prosecution’s evidence insufficient to uphold the earlier conviction.

The court’s position ultimately led to the actor’s release, bringing an end to a prolonged and deeply divisive chapter in the entertainment industry.
