Newcastle United dented Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes on Saturday as Harvey Barnes scored twice in a dramatic and controversial 2–1 victory at St James’ Park.

Pep Guardiola’s side fell behind to Barnes’ crisp second-half finish before Ruben Dias equalised for the champions. But just moments later, Barnes restored Newcastle’s lead, sparking a lengthy VAR check for a possible offside involving Bruno Guimaraes. After several minutes of review, the goal was allowed to stand much to City’s frustration.

Guardiola was further incensed by a first-half incident in which Phil Foden appealed for a penalty following a forceful challenge by Fabian Schar, with VAR again siding against City.

The defeat City’s fourth in the league this season leaves them third, four points behind leaders Arsenal, who host Tottenham on Sunday. Guardiola, who downplayed title-race talk earlier in the week, will rue the missed opportunity to close the gap.

City had entered the international break on a high after a 3–0 victory over Liverpool that capped a run of seven wins in eight matches across all competitions. But an uncharacteristically sloppy display on Tyneside allowed Newcastle to claim only their second league win over City in 36 meetings.

Erling Haaland, chasing his 100th league goal in England, endured a rare off-day, missing several clear chances and failing to find the net for just the third time in 21 appearances for club and country this season.

Newcastle also squandered opportunities, notably through Barnes, before the winger redeemed himself in the 64th minute. City responded quickly as Dias hammered home the equaliser, his first league goal since scoring at the same ground four years earlier.

But Newcastle struck back almost instantly. Nick Woltemade’s header found Guimaraes, whose effort bounced off the crossbar and fell kindly for Barnes to volley in the decisive goal.

Another fireworks-filled VAR review ensued, but the verdict favoured Newcastle, sending St James’ Park into celebrations and securing Eddie Howe’s first-ever Premier League win over City at the 19th attempt.

The victory eases the pressure on Newcastle after back-to-back league defeats, while City return to Manchester frustrated by wasted chances, contentious decisions, and a title race slipping further from their grasp.
