Eight people have been confirmed dead, and four others are currently receiving treatment at the Oyo State General Hospital after a tragic road crash that occurred on Tuesday along the Oyo–Ogbomoso Expressway.

The incident took place directly in front of the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, a corridor known for heavy traffic and frequent commuter activity.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the development on Wednesday, outlining the scope of the casualties and the emergency response deployed.

The state Sector Commander, Mary Alo, told Punch that a total of 19 individuals were involved in the crash, which left a significant portion of the victims with fatal or severe injuries.

According to her, eight people died on the spot, while four injured survivors were immediately taken to the Oyo State General Hospital in Oyo town, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

She added that the remains of the deceased have also been deposited in the hospital morgue pending identification and further procedures.

Details regarding the cause of the accident have not yet been made public, but the location has long been considered a high-risk segment of the Oyo–Ogbomoso route due to speeding, aggressive driving, and the mix of heavy-duty vehicles with commuter buses.

Residents and frequent travelers have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of speed regulations and improved road signage to reduce collisions on that stretch.

The latest crash has once again raised concerns over the rising rate of road accidents across Nigeria.

According to FRSC data from previous quarters, human error—particularly speeding, wrongful overtaking, and loss of control—remains the leading cause of most fatal incidents on major highways.

Safety stakeholders have consistently urged transporters, especially commercial drivers, to prioritise caution and vehicle maintenance.

Emergency responders were said to have arrived at the crash site promptly, coordinating evacuation efforts and ensuring that the injured received immediate medical attention.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the crash caused temporary traffic delays as security agents and hospital officials worked to clear the scene.

As the hospital continues to stabilise the survivors, authorities say further information—including the suspected cause of the crash and details of the vehicles involved—will be made available after ongoing investigations.

The FRSC has also encouraged road users to remain vigilant, especially as the festive season approaches, a period during which accident rates typically spike due to increased travel.

More updates are expected as investigations progress.
