Ed9Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has ordered intensified surveillance across major highways and communities following threats of possible bandit attacks.

The directive was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by the f Press Secretary, Fred Itua, who said security agencies had already begun coordinated operations across forests, boundary areas, and known flashpoints.

According to the statement, the renewed action follows a viral social media video in which a self-acclaimed bandit threatened attacks around Ekpoma and neighbouring communities in Edo Central Senatorial District.

Itua explained that since assuming office, Okpebholo has prioritised security and has been holding continuous strategic briefings to strengthen the state’s defence architecture. He said the administration had activated an extensive surveillance network covering the Benin-Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma-Uromi Road, Ehor-Iruekpen axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu-Irua-Ubiaja route, and the Benin-Afuze-Auchi corridor, among others.

“These measures are aimed at early detection, rapid response, and sustained pressure on criminal networks,” Itua said.

He added that search-and-comb operations were in progress, supported by enhanced intelligence gathering and coordinated patrols to prevent criminals from establishing safe havens anywhere in the state.

The government noted that significant breakthroughs had already been made, including arrests linked to recent security incidents, with more leads currently being pursued.

Itua assured the public that operations would continue until every part of Edo State urban areas, rural communities, and transit routes is fully secured for residents, travellers, and investors.

He urged citizens to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid spreading unverified or panic-inducing information.

The statement reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to deploying all lawful measures to ensure criminals find no space to operate within the state.
