The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja has renewed his call for constitutional roles for traditional rulers in Nigeria to strengthen governance and grassroots development.
Oba Ladoja made the call on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Lagos House, Marina.
The traditional ruler said that assigning constitutional responsibilities to traditional rulers would enhance their contribution to peace, security and community development across the country.
“There is no dispute between the traditional institution and the Oyo State Government.
“However, giving traditional rulers constitutional roles will further strengthen our relationship with government and enable us to serve our people better,” he said.
The Olubadan explained that his visit was also to appreciate Sanwo-Olu for his support and presence during his coronation last year.
He commended the Lagos State Government for its infrastructural development, describing the transformation across the state as impressive and people-oriented.
“I must commend Governor Sanwo-Olu for the massive infrastructural development in Lagos.
“The impact is visible and commendable,” Oba Ladoja said.
In his response, Sanwo-Olu described Ibadan as a historic city and rallying point of the Yoruba race.
“Ibadan remains an epitome of Yoruba heritage and unity, and we are proud of its cultural significance,” the governor said.
He thanked the royal father for the visit and praised his leadership in promoting peace and harmony in Oyo State and the South-West region.
“Your Majesty has continued to play a critical role in ensuring peace, unity and stability in Oyo State and beyond, and we deeply appreciate your efforts,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to working with traditional rulers in fostering development and social cohesion.
