Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, told Secretaries to State Governments, SSGs, that the success of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda will be judged by results, not policy rhetoric, as Nigeria heads toward the 2027 general elections next year.
Speaking at a breakout session for SSGs during the Renewed Hope Ambassadors’ Strategic Summit at the State House Banquet Hall, Akume described SSGs as the “engine room” of subnational governance and key “chief coordinators and ambassadors” for translating federal priorities into state action.
He noted that progressive states now account for 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states, urging them to deepen coordination through the Forum of the SGF with SSGs and to communicate programmes and outcomes down to grassroots communities.

Akume restated the administration’s eight priorities—economic growth and jobs, food security, access to capital, poverty reduction, national security, inclusivity, fairness and rule of law, and anti-corruption—adding that they have been expanded into focus areas spanning economic reform, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, human capital, industrialisation and governance.
Central to his message was performance management. He pointed to the federal Central Delivery Coordination Unit (CDCU), established under Executive Order 12, which tracks ministerial commitments using scorecards, dashboards, delivery task teams and quarterly reviews.
Akume urged states to mirror the model by creating state delivery coordination units within SSG offices, requiring each ministry to adopt three to five “legacy deliverables” with SMART targets, and using commitment trackers, KPIs and escalation matrices to resolve bottlenecks.
He recommended regular monthly and quarterly reviews, annual retreats, performance contracts for top officials, and citizen-facing updates to build trust.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is a covenant,” Akume said, pledging SGF support with templates and coordination for disciplined delivery nationwide.
