Security operatives have stepped up surveillance and intensified proactive deployments across Zamfara State amid intelligence that armed bandits may be plotting retaliatory attacks following recent coordinated offensives that dealt heavy blows to their network.

The anticipated reprisals are believed to be in response to sustained operations by Nigerian military forces, working alongside the Department of State Services, DSS, and hybrid security units under Operation FANSAN YANMA, which targeted bandit hideouts in Tsafe Local Government Area and adjoining forest corridors.

The operations reportedly resulted in the killing of about 65 armed bandits, including senior commanders linked to the criminal network of notorious bandit leader Ado Aliero, long associated with deadly attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling across Zamfara and neighbouring states.

Among those reportedly neutralised was Kachalla Iliya Sarki, identified as Ado Aliero’s son, alongside other key field commanders said to have coordinated violent operations across the area.

Security sources said other bandit leaders eliminated during the offensive included Dogo Sule, Iliya Mai Rasha, Kachalla Biyabiki, and Kachalla Dogon Bete, all of whom were believed to have played strategic roles in directing attacks in Tsafe, Maru and nearby communities.

The losses are said to have significantly disrupted the operational structure of the bandit network. However, intelligence reports indicate that surviving fighters may be attempting to regroup and launch revenge attacks against security formations, vulnerable settlements and other soft targets.

In response to the threat, security agencies have reportedly expanded surveillance across flashpoints, forest fringes and major highway corridors, while reinforcing troop presence in vulnerable communities to deter any attempted incursion.

Sources said the planned reprisals may involve the movement of large numbers of armed fighters through forest routes, using motorcycles for rapid mobilisation and multi-axis coordination. Intelligence indicates that more than 200 motorcycles were sighted around the Unguwar Tsamiya forest axis, with reports also linking notorious bandit leader Bello Turji to the mobilisation.

Security officials said the ongoing pressure on bandit enclaves in Munhaye and adjoining forest belts has not only disrupted logistics networks but also led to the rescue of victims previously held in captivity.

Authorities believe the latest intelligence underscores the urgent need for sustained aerial and ground surveillance, rapid-response readiness, and continuous clearance operations to prevent the regrouping of criminal elements and protect rural communities from surprise attacks.

Residents have also been urged to remain alert, report suspicious movements promptly, and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to deny the bandits freedom of movement and avert any breakdown of law and order.

Operation FANSAN YANMA forces, supported by DSS operatives and hybrid units, are continuing coordinated clearance operations aimed at dismantling remaining camps, blocking escape routes, and ensuring that any planned reprisal attacks are detected early and decisively thwarted.
