A 14-year-old junior golfer and student at Technical College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Malik Adams has emerged champion of the inaugural Golf Shop NG Tournament.

Defeating a field of more than 170 players at the Elephant Cement Golf Club in Sagamu, Ogun State.

In a statement on Wednesday by Middle Bridge Services, the consulting company for Golf Shop NG Ltd, Adams, who played off a 25 handicap, delivered one of the most remarkable rounds of the competition, posting a Net 61, 10-under-par, and Gross 86 to finish six strokes clear of his closest rival.

His round was reportedly defined by remarkable consistency and composure, recording 16 pars and two birdies on holes 4 and 8, effectively outclassing a field that included experienced club players and seasoned amateurs.

The maiden edition of the tournament, organized by Golf Shop NG Ltd, was said to have attracted wide attention within the regional golfing community, with over 180 registered participants competing for honors at the well-attended event.

The ceremonial tee-off featured prominent figures, including the Ogun State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Akande Ọmọniyi; the Ẹbi of Ìdènà, Oba Lukman Adebambo Salami; Asiwaju Adeen of Ogun State, Alhaji Adebayo Samsudeen Apelogun; retired Chief Justice of Kwara State, Rtd. Chief Justice Lambo Akanbi; Captain of Abeokuta Golf Club, Umar Bakare; and Captain of Elephant Cement Golf Club, Engr. Adedeji Ẹsan.

Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, Ẹsan lauded the organisers for elevating the profile of the club and introducing a competitive platform that blends youth development with elite participation.

Ẹsan stated, “We are delighted to witness this Golf Shop NG inaugural event. Mr. Kuti has brought a much-needed spotlight and glory to our club. We are fully committed and ready to host future editions of this tournament on our grounds.”

Mr. Kuti, the organizer of the tournament, described the competition as a strategic step toward expanding grassroots golf development in Nigeria while providing a platform for emerging talents like Adams to compete alongside more experienced players.

Kuti said, “We are eager to further contribute to the growth and development of the prestigious golf game at the grassroots, and we are excited with the turnout and support we have so far received for the success of this tournament.

“We are also happy that part of our vision for the competition, which is to provide platforms for younger ones to also showcase and polish their skills in golf games, is already becoming a reality, and so we shall definitely not relent in our push for the betterment of this great game.”

While thanking the Local Organizing Committee for helping to put together a highly successful and exciting golf tournament, Kuti commended various multinational companies for identifying with Golf Shop NG to make the hosting of the tournament a resounding success.

Golf Shop NG Ltd, a golf accessories and equipment company based at the Elephant Cement Golf Club in Sagamu, said the tournament marks its entry into competitive event promotion, with plans to sustain the initiative as part of efforts to grow the sport across the state and beyond.
