A clandestine sexual ring operating wife-swapping practice in Katagum Zone of Bauchi has been dismantled by the Hisbah Police which arrested seven people.

The suspects, identified as members of a local group known as Wuddadu, were apprehended in Azare, the headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The operation, conducted by the Hisbah command’s enforcement unit, “Operation Ko Ba Kobo,” has sparked intense debate over moral boundaries and religious interpretations in the region.

The arrests followed a string of complaints from concerned residents and internal whistleblowers within the Wuddadu group who became unsettled by the clandestine arrangements.

During preliminary interrogations, the suspects reportedly admitted to the practice but attempted to cloak the illicit activities in spiritual significance. One of the primary suspects claimed the group’s actions were sanctioned by a series of “spiritual dreams” and revelations that allegedly endorsed the exchange of wives among members for sexual and marital purposes.

The Hisbah Zonal Commander, Malam Ridwan Muhammad Khairan, was quick to dismiss these claims as a total distortion of Islamic teachings.

“Preliminary findings show the suspects deliberately organised the practice and attempted to justify it using claims of spiritual revelations,” Khairan told journalists. “There is no basis for such actions in Islam. Marriage must follow laid-down principles, and what they engaged in is clearly against Sharia and tantamount to adultery”.

The scandal has caused significant friction even within the Wuddadu group. The group’s leader in Azare, Malam Sagir Bashir, clarified that the wife-swapping was not part of their official doctrine but a misguided interpretation by a few rogue members.

According to Bashir, the group had spent over a year attempting to counsel and correct the individuals involved through internal warnings. When the secret exchanges continued despite these interventions, the group took the unprecedented step of reporting their own members to the morality police to protect the community’s integrity.

As of Thursday afternoon, the seven suspects remain in custody, with the Hisbah command warning of firm legal action to serve as a deterrent. The command has urged the Muslim community to seek authentic religious knowledge and remain vigilant against the “twisting” of sacred teachings for immoral ends.
