The Kano Hisbah Board has cancelled the planned court-ordered marriage between TikTok content creators–Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.

The drama began after videos showing the pair kissing and cuddling went viral on TikTok, sparking outrage among conservative residents of Kano.

The footage was condemned as immoral, prompting a magistrate court in the state to instruct the Hisbah Board — the Islamic morality police — to organise their wedding within 60 days. The court described the video as “indecent” and ordered that the duo be united in marriage to “correct” their conduct.

Following the directive, Hisbah officials contacted both families and began marriage preparations, including dowry discussions and medical tests.

Reports also emerged that the Kano State Government had offered to provide a house for the couple to meet the bride’s conditions. Mai Wushirya’s parents even gave their consent to the union.

However, the process was halted after Hisbah’s Director-General, Abba Sufi, confirmed that Mai Wushirya confessed to lying about being in love with Yar Guda.

His confession came during an internal review, where he admitted that his earlier claim of affection was merely a way to escape punishment.

“Mai Wushirya told us he was never in love with Yar Guda. He only said that to evade punishment,” Sufi said. Following this, Hisbah cancelled the marriage and referred the case back to the court for further action.

The marriage order had drawn nationwide criticism, with the Nigerian Bar Association,NBA, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of fundamental rights.

NBA National Officer, Mazi Afam Osigwe, stressed that no court in Nigeria has the power to compel any individual into marriage.

Kano, a deeply conservative state under Sharia law, has witnessed increased scrutiny of social media creators.

Hisbah has in recent years arrested TikTokers and entertainers over videos deemed immoral, fueling ongoing debate over morality, law, and personal freedom in northern Nigeria.
