Determined to strengthen professional standards and restore integrity, the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria has promised to intensify action against cybercriminals, quacks, and unlicensed practices in Nigeria’s Information Technology sector.
President and Chairman of Council, Dr. Essien Eyo, disclosed this during a virtual press conference on Friday ahead of the Council’s 2026 Information Technology Professionals’ Assembly and Annual General Meeting.
Eyo said the council remained committed to enforcing strict compliance with professional regulations to safeguard Nigeria’s computing ecosystem from unethical practices and unqualified operators.
He warned that the council would no longer tolerate unlicensed practice in the IT industry, stressing that enforcement measures would be strengthened in line with the provisions of the law.
According to him, the CPN Act makes it mandatory for all individuals and organisations involved in computing and professional IT services to register and obtain valid licences from the council.
“It is illegal to engage in computing and professional practice without satisfying the requirement of registration and possession of a valid licence,” he said.
Eyo noted that the council would continue to intensify efforts aimed at eliminating quackery, arbitrary practices, and poor professional standards in the sector.
“CPN is committed to ensuring high professional ethics and standards, and we will continue to intensify efforts to eliminate quackery, arbitrary practice, and lack of standards in the IT sector,” he stated.
He further disclosed that the 2026 IT Professionals’ Assembly, scheduled for May 13 and 14 at the NAF Conference Centre, would provide a strategic platform for promoting regulatory compliance, professional development, and industry collaboration.

The event, which marks the 20th edition of the annual assembly, is themed “Digital Resilience and Inclusion for Smart Economy” and aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital economy agenda and the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope initiative.
According to Eyo, the theme reflects the urgent need to build a secure, resilient, and inclusive digital ecosystem capable of addressing emerging technological disruptions, cybersecurity threats, and economic challenges.
He added that discussions at the assembly would focus on ethical technology deployment, emerging digital risks, inclusive policy development, and stronger collaboration among government, industry, academia, and civil society.
A major highlight of the event, he said, would be the induction of new members into the IT profession, while the programme would also be hosted in a hybrid format to enable wider participation.
“The 2026 IT Professionals’ Assembly is not just an event but a strategic platform for shaping Nigeria’s digital future,” Eyo added.
He also confirmed that the keynote address would be delivered by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.
Speaking further, Vice President of Council, Aliu Abdullahi, said the establishment of the CPN was a deliberate effort by the Federal Government to ensure effective regulation of Nigeria’s rapidly growing IT industry.
Abdullahi explained that the council’s responsibilities include setting professional standards, accrediting academic programmes, conducting professional examinations, regulating practice, enforcing ethical conduct, and maintaining the national register of computing professionals.
He reiterated that all individuals and organisations involved in IT training, computing services, and related activities must be properly registered and licensed by the council.
He also urged media organisations to support public awareness campaigns around the council’s activities, particularly the forthcoming assembly, which he described as critical to strengthening Nigeria’s digital governance and professional integrity.
