The Kano State Government is considering plans to establish a state-owned airline as part of efforts to expand its economic base, enhance transportation services and create new sources of revenue for the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has unveiled plans to establish a state‑owned airline, a bold initiative he described as both strategic and patriotic.
Speaking to Kano pilgrims in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the governor emphasized that the proposal was driven by the aviation industry’s critical role in the global economy and its potential to transform Kano’s socio‑economic landscape.
Governor Yusuf explained that the envisioned airline would not only carry commercial value but also serve as a symbol of Kano’s identity, flying the state’s flag while meeting the needs of its people and government.
He stressed that such an investment would provide Kano with greater flexibility in transportation planning, boost business activities, and strengthen connectivity with other parts of Nigeria and the wider international community.
Highlighting the aviation sector as one of the fastest‑growing industries worldwide, the governor noted its contributions to trade, tourism, investment, and job creation.
He argued that Kano, as a historic commercial hub and one of Nigeria’s largest states, stands to benefit immensely from tapping into air transportation.

Beyond commerce, Yusuf revealed that the airline could play a vital role in future Hajj and Umrah operations, easing logistical challenges and ensuring more efficient service delivery for pilgrims.
He assured Kano pilgrims currently in the Holy Land that adequate arrangements were underway for their return journey, with airlift operations scheduled to begin on June 24.
“Our administration remains committed to exploring innovative ways of improving service delivery, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the economic foundations of Kano State.
We believe that investments in strategic sectors such as aviation will open new windows of opportunity for our people and generate sustainable revenue for government,” he said.
Observers have described the proposed airline as a reflection of the administration’s broader vision of transforming Kano into a modern economic hub capable of attracting investment, supporting commerce, and enhancing competitiveness in an interconnected world.
If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to complement ongoing efforts in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and human capital growth, while positioning Kano as a major player in Nigeria’s aviation and transportation industry.
