The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has picked Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate.

The announcement, confirmed on Monday by Gwarzo’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, is expected to reshape political calculations in Kano and further strengthen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement within the NDC.

According to Shuaibu, the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the state and was aimed at boosting the party’s chances in the highly anticipated 2027 governorship election.

“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” Shuaibu said.

He described Mustapha Kwankwaso as a loyal and committed party member whose nomination reflects the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and broad-based representation.

Mustapha is the son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and a former governor of Kano State, whose political influence remains significant in the state and across northern Nigeria.

Political analysts believe the choice of Mustapha could help consolidate support among Kwankwasiyya loyalists while expanding the NDC’s appeal ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested governorship race.

The development comes as political parties intensify preparations and strategic alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, with Kano expected to remain one of the country’s most closely watched political battlegrounds.

Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, emerged as the NDC governorship candidate following consultations among party leaders and stakeholders.

Observers say the selection of Mustapha Kwankwaso signals a strategic move by the NDC to leverage the popularity and political structure of the Kwankwasiyya movement as the race for Kano Government House gathers momentum.

More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as the party unveils its broader campaign strategy for the 2027 elections.
