The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous engagement with relevant stakeholders insecurity and issues around social welfare, education, youth development and economic empowerment across the country.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, made the pledge while addressing the National Executive Council meeting of the Christian Association of Nigeria, held from June 17 to 18, 2026.

Akume said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognises the concerns of Christians and other citizens regarding safety, equal opportunities, freedom of worship, access to justice and participation in national development. He added that the government remains committed to strengthening institutions that protect fundamental rights, uphold the rule of law and promote social inclusion.

He said the Federal Government would continue engaging stakeholders on issues affecting security, welfare, education, youth empowerment and economic development, while also ensuring an environment that enables the Christian community to sustain its contributions to national development.

The SGF noted that Christians have played significant roles in education, healthcare, humanitarian services and community development, expressing confidence that deliberations at the CAN NEC meeting would yield practical recommendations to strengthen national unity, promote peace and advance Christian welfare.

Describing CAN as a respected voice of conscience, Akume said the association has consistently advocated justice, peace, equity, good governance and the welfare of Christians in Nigeria. He added that the NEC meeting, as CAN’s highest decision-making platform, provides an opportunity for reflection, strategic engagement and collective action on national issues.

He acknowledged that Nigeria continues to face challenges linked to global economic uncertainty, insecurity, climate pressures, inflation, youth unemployment and social tensions. Despite this, he said the country has continued to show resilience and hope, with the Tinubu administration focused on building a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous nation through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, improving infrastructure, enhancing food security, creating jobs, promoting social investment programmes, attracting investment and strengthening national security.

While noting that some reforms have required sacrifices from citizens, he said the government remains determined to ensure that the long-term benefits lead to improved living standards, greater economic opportunities and sustainable development.

The SGF also underscored the role of the Church in nation-building, describing the Christian faith as a force for moral transformation, social justice, education, healthcare delivery, community development and humanitarian service. He commended churches across the country for operating schools, hospitals, orphanages, rehabilitation centres and other charitable initiatives that complement government efforts.

Akume further reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to sustain constructive engagement with CAN and other faith-based organisations on issues of national cohesion, security, religious freedom, education, youth empowerment, poverty alleviation and social justice.

He said sustainable national development requires collaboration among government, religious bodies, traditional institutions, civil society, the private sector and citizens, and called on Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence.

He also commended Christian and Muslim leaders for promoting dialogue, mutual understanding and harmony, urging religious leaders to remain ambassadors of peace, reconciliation and national unity.

Akume called on the Church to continue praying for the nation and its leaders, while urging citizens to uphold the values of integrity, patriotism, compassion, accountability and responsible citizenship.

He expressed appreciation to the leadership of CAN for the invitation to attend the NEC meeting and prayed for continued blessings on the Church, Nigeria’s leaders and the country.
