Chelsea produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night and book their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Leeds appeared to be in control after taking a two-goal lead, but Chelsea completely transformed the contest after the interval. Xabi Alonso’s half-time changes proved decisive as the hosts produced a remarkable attacking display.

Leeds took the lead in the first half through Tarik Muharemovic before Brenden Aaronson doubled the advantage shortly after the restart, leaving the Blues facing a difficult route back into the match.

Alonso responded by introducing several key players, including Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Reece James and Morgan Rogers. The changes immediately shifted the momentum in Chelsea’s favour.

Palmer reduced the deficit from the penalty spot before quickly adding a second goal to bring the Blues level. The Blues then completed the turnaround with further goals from Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck and Valentín Barco.

Morgan Rogers was particularly influential after coming on, providing several assists as Chelsea repeatedly exposed gaps in the Leeds defense during their second-half surge.

Leeds managed to pull another goal back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, briefly giving the visitors hope of another comeback. The Blues, however, remained in control and added a sixth goal to complete the emphatic victory.

The result capped a remarkable turnaround for Chelsea, who had looked vulnerable during the opening period before their substitutes changed the direction of the match.

For Alonso, the victory also demonstrated the depth available to him as Chelsea navigated a heavily rotated squad. The Blues manager made nine changes to the side that started the previous match, while 16-year-old Reggie Watson also made his debut.

Chelsea’s victory sends them into the next stage of the Carabao Cup after a nine-goal contest that saw the Blues score six times following a difficult opening spell.

Leeds, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on a match in which they held a commanding advantage but were unable to withstand the Blues’ second half attacking pressure.
