Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about a recent heartbreak, revealing that a woman he wanted to build a serious relationship with rejected his proposal because she was not ready for a committed relationship.
The 26-year-old singer made the disclosure during a livestream with streamer Okiki, explaining that the experience later became the inspiration behind his latest single, “Oh No,” which was released on September 11, 2026.
Rema said he approached the woman because he wanted a “serious relationship,” but she told him she was not prepared to commit to one person.
According to the singer, the woman explained that she still wanted to experience life as a single woman and was not ready to be taken “off the streets.”
“The song was inspired by a lady I wanted a serious relationship with, but she said she still wants to be on the streets,” Rema said.
The singer did not disclose the identity of the woman or provide further details about their relationship. His comments, however, offered insight into the personal experience behind “Oh No,” which centres on romantic emotions and relationship uncertainty.

Released on September 11, the single is Rema’s latest release and is officially listed by Apple Music as a 2026 single.
Rema also reflected on the rapid pace of his career and personal life since he rose to prominence as a teenager. He said he has been taking time to reassess his life because “everything moved so fast” after he became famous at the age of 17.
Rema’s rise began in 2019 when he signed with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records, and released his self-titled debut EP.
His breakout songs, including “Iron Man” and “Dumebi,” quickly established him as one of the prominent young voices in Nigerian music.
His international profile expanded further with the release of “Calm Down” in 2022. The song’s remix featuring Selena Gomez reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, according to his record label, while becoming one of the most internationally recognized Afrobeats recordings of its period.
Rema has continued to release music while balancing an increasingly global career, including his 2024 album “HEIS,” which earned him his first Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Performance, according to Mavin Records.
His latest comments present a more personal side of the singer, as he links a recent experience of romantic rejection to his creative process while also reflecting on the speed of his transition from teenage newcomer to internationally recognized recording artist.
