The Federal Government says activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, will be low-key, with events focused on honouring the contributions and sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and heroines.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said this at the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the anniversary in Abuja, where he urged members to work with urgency ahead of the October 1 celebration.
Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, Mrs Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens, said the anniversary would provide an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
He said the progress recorded since independence was built on the foundation laid by the country’s nationalists, stressing the need to remember their sacrifices and enduring legacies.
According to him, the anniversary would also provide an opportunity for the President Bola Tinubu administration to showcase its achievements and highlight ongoing efforts to reposition the country through its reform initiatives amid prevailing socio-economic challenges.
