Accord Party’s Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim will join the list of candidates for the 2027 presidential election after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, agreed to comply with a court order recognizing his candidacy.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced this on Thursday in Abuja at an event organized by the National Orientation Agency.
Amupitan said the commission would comply with a Federal High Court judgment directing Accord Party to recognize Olawepo-Hashim as its presidential candidate and submit his name to INEC.
The ruling, delivered on October 5, 2026, in Abuja, followed months of internal disputes over the party’s presidential ticket.
Amupitan said the commission would update its official records to reflect the judgment, increasing the number of presidential candidates from the 18 published in September to 19.

Speaking on preparations for the 2027 general election, the INEC chairman described the polls as potentially Africa’s largest democratic exercise and one of the world’s most complex logistical operations.
He cited more than 103 million registered voters, 176,846 polling units and 774 local government areas as indicators of the scale of the exercise.
The elections will cover the presidential and National Assembly seats, as well as governorship and State Houses of Assembly positions.
INEC is expected to publish an updated final list formally including Olawepo-Hashim in compliance with the court order.
