In adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding inked between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress ,NLC, on Monday, October 2, 2023, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission ,NSIWC, has commenced the distribution of a wage award amounting to N35,000 for all federal employees.
This development was unveiled in a circular issued by the NSIWC on Thursday, which indicated that the wage award would take effect from September 1, 2023, pending the anticipated ratification of a new national minimum wage.
It’s worth recalling that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress had vehemently threatened an indefinite strike due to disagreements stemming from the removal of subsidies on the price of premium motor spirit also called petrol.
However, after lengthy negotiations, the Federal Government and the Union reached a consensus, leading to the approval of the N35,000 wage for all federal workers.
The circular, in part, read: “I refer to the Memorandum of Understanding reached between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Monday, October 2, 2023, as a result of the dispute arising from the withdrawal of subsidy on the price of premium motor spirit.
It hereby conveys the approval of the president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the grant of a wage award of N35,000 only per month to all Federal Government workers, with effect from September 1, 2023, pending the expected signing of a new national minimum wage.”
