The Senate has granted approval for the nomination of Zak Adedeji as the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service , FIRS . Adedeji went through the screening process in the upper chamber on Tuesday, where he outlined his plans to enhance the nation’s revenue generation.

During the screening, Adedeji raised concerns regarding the lack of comprehensive information in the oil and gas sector. He assured the Senate that his leadership would work to address revenue leakages, particularly in this sector. Adedeji emphasized the core problem in the country as the absence of accurate and comprehensive data, which he considers fundamental for decision-making.

He expressed his commitment to establishing robust data systems that would enable the precise tracking of crude oil vessels entering the country and the associated tax revenue. Adedeji emphasized that this data would identify individuals who are not paying their fair share of taxes.

Furthermore, Adedeji pledged to centralize the identification system in Nigeria and enhance the nation’s data mining capacity. His goal is to strengthen data management and utilization for effective revenue collection.

It’s worth noting that Zak Adedeji’s confirmation comes more than a month after he was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the new Chairman of FIRS, also serving as his Special Adviser on Revenue. Following this appointment, President Tinubu directed the former FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami, to proceed on three months of pre-retirement leave and requested the Senate to expedite the confirmation of Adedeji’s appointment.
