The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria has temporarily suspended its operations following an explosion at the commission that resulted in two deaths and injuries to two others.

This development is coming after an explosion occurred at the commission on Monday which led to the death of two persons and injured two others. The High Commission announced the suspension of its operations via its X account, formerly Twitter.

This suspension means that the High Commission will not be providing visa and immigration services to individuals seeking to visit or immigrate to Canada. Additionally, services to Canadians living in Nigeria and Canadians in Equatorial Guinea, as well as Sao Tome and Principe, will be temporarily unavailable.

The Canadian government has also issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Nigeria, including Abuja, due to the unpredictable security situation in the country.

The advisory cites significant risks of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks, and kidnappings.

Specific states are highlighted as high-risk areas, including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Plateau, Kogi, Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Yobe, and the Niger Delta states of Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers.

These warnings are in response to the ongoing security challenges and risks in Nigeria.

The suspension of the Canadian High Commission’s operations and the travel advisory for its citizens reflect the serious security concerns in Nigeria and the impact on diplomatic missions and travelers to the country.
