The Ministry of Works, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, has launched emergency repairs for the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Ministry of Works in collaboration with the Lagos State Government on Wednesday flagged off emergency repairs of the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, revealed that the rehabilitation project would cost over N21.074 billion due to an expanded scope of work, including the complete replacement of the bridge deck’s asphalt.
The effort aims to enhance road safety and provide a smoother driving experience for commuters on the bridge.
Umahi emphasized the importance of this project in realizing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the overall repositioning of road and bridge infrastructure in Nigeria.
The minister highlighted that previous repair attempts did not address all concerns regarding the bridge’s integrity, necessitating the expansion of the repair scope.

As part of the features agreed upon with the State Government, the project will include installing spikes on guard railings to deter suicide attempts on the bridge.
Umahi assured that repairs for the four ramps of Adekunle/Adeniji would be completed by December 13, facilitating smooth traffic flow during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Main carriageway maintenance is scheduled to commence in January 2024.
The ongoing work focuses on the superstructure elements of the bridge, while investigations, design, and later substructure restoration will follow.
Umahi and the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing the maintenance of Third Mainland Bridge and other critical infrastructure in the state.
Hamzat urged residents to endure the temporary discomfort caused by the repair work, emphasizing its necessity for the greater good.
The minister and deputy governor also visited the starting point of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, discussing its potential impact on interconnectivity, tourism, job creation, and overall infrastructure development.
