Nigeria’s hopes for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup have been dashed after the Golden Eaglets failed to reach the semifinals at the AFCON U-17 Championship held in Algeria earlier this year.
The team, drawn in Group B alongside Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia, finished second in the group with six points.
In the quarterfinals, Nigeria faced Burkina Faso and suffered a 2-1 defeat, thus missing out on the opportunity to qualify for the U-17 World Cup.
The four semifinalists, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, and Morocco, will now represent Africa at the age-grade tournament in Indonesia.
Despite Nigeria’s historical success in the U-17 World Cup, with five titles in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015, the team will not be part of the upcoming edition.
The cancellation of the 2021 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic added to the anticipation for the 2023 event.
As the disappointment settles in for Nigerian football fans, the absence of the Golden Eaglets from the U-17 World Cup serves as a reminder of the challenges and uncertainties in the world of sports, where success and qualification are not guaranteed.
