The Independent National Electoral Commission , INEC, has issued a stern warning to its staff ahead of the Kogi state governorship election, cautioning them about severe consequences if found wanting in the discharge of their duties.
The commission emphasized its commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all candidates and urged stakeholders to collaborate for a successful election.
Dr. Hale Longpet, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kogi State at a press conference in Lokoja said that the responsibility of INEC is to safeguard the electoral process and ensure fairness among political parties and candidates.
He reiterated that INEC is not a political party and has no candidate in the election.
Longpet highlighted measures to enhance the integrity of the electoral process, including the prohibition of voters carrying phones into polling booths to prevent vote buying.
He also mentioned the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System , BVAS, for voter verification and authentication.
Additionally, the commissioner stated that polling unit results would be uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing ,IReV, portal, and all election duty officials have undergone training. Despite challenges like difficult terrain, INEC is determined to ensure a smooth process for voters.
As the election date approaches, the stern warning from INEC serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process, and the need for electoral officials to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
