U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met in San Francisco for the first time in a year to discuss various issues between the two nations.

However, substantial progress on the significant differences between the U.S. and China may be deferred to a later time. Biden and Xi arrived in San Francisco ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ,APEC, summit. The summit occurs against the backdrop of Chinese economic challenges, territorial disputes with neighbors, and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has implications for U.S. alliances.
Despite efforts to manage Xi’s visit, protests for and against China’s ruling Communist Party lined the route from the airport to the conference site, creating an unusual atmosphere for Xi.

The leaders are expected to meet at a secure and remote location outside San Francisco, away from the APEC summit.

Other topics on the agenda include Chinese interference in foreign elections, the status of detained U.S. citizens in China, and concrete steps to address issues ranging from military communications to trade and climate.
