The Nigerian Senate has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory ,FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, to investigate the implementation of a $500 million contract for the installation of CCTV cameras in the FCT.

This resolution comes in response to a motion on the Galadimawa Kidnapping Tragedy, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko.

Senator Nwoko expressed concern over a recent kidnapping incident in the Galadimawa area of the FCT, where 19 individuals were abducted, including his Senior Legislative Aide, Mr. Chris Agidy. Despite immediate measures taken, 12 of the individuals have been reported killed, and seven remain in the custody of the kidnappers.

The Senate called for a joint operation involving the Army, Police, and DSS to intensify search efforts for the kidnapped victims. Additionally, it urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to increase surveillance patrols in Abuja to prevent further kidnappings. The IGP was also tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the recent kidnappings in Abuja.

Furthermore, the Senate mandated its committees on security to enforce robust security measures within Abuja and work with security agencies to consider installing CCTV cameras in specific areas in Abuja and other parts of the country. The Committee on FCT was instructed to collaborate with the FCT Minister to address the insecurity in Abuja.

This resolution reflects the Senate’s commitment to addressing the rising security challenges, particularly in the nation’s capital, and emphasizes the need for effective implementation of security measures, including the utilization of advanced technologies such as CCTV cameras.
