In a significant move aimed at enhancing the motivation and dedication of teachers in Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma has signed into law a legislation extending the retirement age for educators.
The new retirement age is now set at 65 years or 40 years of service, a notable increase from the previous criteria of 35 years of service or reaching 60 years of age.
Governor Uzodimma, in an official statement after signing the bill on Wednesday, expressed his belief that the revised retirement age would serve as a positive incentive for teachers in the state’s public schools.
He highlighted the expectation that with an additional five years, teachers would invest their time and efforts more profoundly to elevate the quality of education provided to Imo State’s children.
Describing the legislative change as a form of “value addition,” Governor Uzodimma urged teachers to view it as an opportunity to redouble their commitment and seriousness towards their profession. He emphasized the importance of their role in shaping the educational landscape and fostering the development of well-rounded and knowledgeable students.
The governor congratulated the teachers on the positive development and stressed that the new law was designed to instill a sense of job security, ultimately fostering a more efficient and effective teaching environment. He called on educators to embrace this gesture and continue to play a pivotal role in molding the future of the state’s youth.
By extending the retirement age, Governor Uzodimma aims to create an atmosphere where teachers feel valued, secure, and motivated to deliver their best to the students of Imo State.
This legislative step not only recognizes the critical role teachers play in shaping the next generation but also underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the state.
