The University of Calabar ,Unical, has officially declared a significant increase in tuition fees for undergraduates, amounting to over 100%.
The announcement was made through a statement released by the institution’s spokesman, Mr. Effiong Eyo, and shared with newsmen in Calabar on Monday. The decision to raise the fees was reportedly reached at an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held on Friday.
According to the statement, the revised fees will be applicable to the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. The fee adjustment affects freshers, returning students, and final year students, varying based on the nature of their courses.
For non-science courses, students in different categories are expected to pay as follows:
– Freshers: N111,000
– Returning students: N91,500
– Final year students: N114,000
Additionally, third-party dues for these categories are set at N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500, respectively.
For science courses, the revised fees are as follows:
– Freshers: N155,000
– Returning students: N125,000
– Final year students: N148,000
Similarly, the third-party dues for these categories are N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500, respectively.
Prior to this increase, the tuition fees for an average student, depending on the department, were N64,050 for freshers, N52,050 for final year students, and N49,500 for returning students.
The management justified the fee increment by citing current economic realities and the necessity to maintain the academic standard for which the university is known. This move has sparked discussions about the financial burden it places on students and the broader implications for access to education.
