In a thrilling encounter, the Nigeria under-17 female volleyball team emerged victorious against their Cameroonian counterparts with a 3-1 win during their second match at the 2023 Girl’s U17 African Nations Volleyball tournament in Abuja.
The match, held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, showcased the resilience of the Nigerian girls as they secured a comeback victory after losing the first set 19-25. The subsequent sets saw the team dominating, winning the second set 25-20, the third set 25-13, and the fourth set 25-22.
The victory comes as a redemption for the Nigerian team, which suffered a previous defeat to Egypt. Despite the celebration, Coach Sunday Akapson emphasized that there is still work to be done, acknowledging that the team has additional matches to play.
While congratulating the girls for their performance, Akapson stated, “This is just a starting point for us. We are meeting them again on Wednesday in the semi-final, and we want to assure you that the girls will replicate this victory.”
Cameroon’s official delegate, Tamoo Henry, commended the girls for their efforts, acknowledging the difficulty of the match. He expressed optimism that the team would improve in their next match and encouraged them to stay focused.
The tournament, which started on Saturday and features only Nigeria, Egypt, and Cameroon due to logistical issues causing two countries to withdraw, is set to conclude on December 8. Nigeria will face Cameroon in the semi-final on Wednesday, with expectations running high for a continued strong performance from the under-17 female volleyball team.
