Rome: Supreme court upholds life sentence for Nigerian man who killed 18-year-old girl

The Supreme Court of Cassation in Rome, Italy, has affirmed the life sentence of Innocent Oseghale, a Nigerian man convicted of the brutal murder of 18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro.

The decision, rendered on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, marks the conclusion of a legal saga that began with Oseghale’s appeal against certain aspects of his 2019 conviction.

Oseghale, now 39, was found guilty of murdering Mastropietro on January 30, 2018, in the countryside near Macerata in Marche. In addition to murder, he was convicted of sexual assault and the destruction of Mastropietro’s body.

During the appeal process, Oseghale contested part of his rape conviction, asserting that he had not engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim before her death. However, the Court of Cassation in Rome definitively settled the matter by upholding the life sentence for murder aggravated by sexual violence, destruction, and concealment of a corpse.

The legal battle, spanning six years and multiple courtrooms, finally concluded with the Supreme Court’s decision. Pamela Mastropietro’s mother, Alessandra Verni, expressed relief after the ruling but emphasized that the family’s pursuit of justice would continue.

The victim’s uncle and family lawyer, Marco Valerio Verni, stated, “I’ve always said that there are other people responsible. As far as we are allowed, we will continue to seek the truth. The conviction, hypothetically speaking, could lead Oseghale to name any accomplices.”

Alessandra Verni, wearing a shirt with her daughter’s photo that she had worn for the past six years, reflected on the painful journey for justice. She vowed to wear it again on January 30th, the anniversary of her daughter’s death, during a torchlight procession in memory of Pamela in Piazza Re di Roma.

The tragic story began in Rome when Pamela, grappling with drug and alcohol addiction and a borderline personality, moved to a therapeutic community in Macerata in October 2017. On January 29, 2018, she left the community and encountered Oseghale, who, after drugging her with heroin, raped and brutally murdered her. Her dismembered body was discovered on January 30.

The Court of Cassation’s ruling solidifies Oseghale’s life sentence, closing the chapter on a harrowing case that exposed the brutality inflicted on Pamela Mastropietro.
