A Borno State High Court, sitting in Maiduguri Monday sentenced Aisha Alkali Wakil, aka Mama Boko Haram and two others to 10 years imprisonment for fraud.
Justice Umaru Fadawu convicted Wakili, alongside Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Soyade for obtaining the sum of N 40 million from one Bashir Abubakar by false pretense.
Head, Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Dele Oyewale stated that the defendants were arraigned by the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Commission in March 5, 2020, on a two count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining by false pretense the sum of N40 million.
On count one they were accused of obtaining the sum of N 40million from one Bashir Abubakar under the false pretense of executing a purported contract for the supply of five X-ray Solar-enabled machines
The count read “that you Aisha Alkali Wakil, Tahiru Alhaji Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyade whilst being the Chief Executive Officer, Programme Manager and Country Director respectively of Complete Care and Aid Foundation and Saidu Mukhtar, at large, sometime in Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did with intent to defraud obtained the sum of Forty Million Naira from one Bashir Abubakar, the Chief Executive Officer of Duty Free Shop Ltd under the false pretense of executing a purported contract for the supply of Five X-ray Machines 1900, with Solar Energy which you knew to be false.”
The action was said to be contrary to Section (1) 1 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
Prosecution counsel, A.I. Arogha presented four witnesses and tendered 17 exhibits. The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.
Justice Fadawu convicted and sentenced them to ten years imprisonment for the offense of conspiracy without an option of fine.
The judge equally ordered the convicts to jointly restitute the sum of N40m to Bashir Muhammad,the complainant.
“The prison term shall run concurrently on the expiration of all prison terms imposed on the convicts by any court”, the Judge said.
Credible News recalls that in September, 2022, the defendants were sentenced to seven years imprisonment over N15 million fraud. Also, last December, a high court in Borno State sentenced Wakil to seven years imprisonment for N66 million fraud.
