Super Falcons’ Coach Randy Waldrum has urged his team to be more clinical infront of goal.
He emphasized the importance of improving their performance if they want to secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics ahead of South Africa.
Nigeria, the nine-time African champions, secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Cameroon’s Lionesses in the second leg of the Women’s Olympic football qualifier held in Abuja. The match was intense, and Nigeria narrowly avoided conceding an away goal, which could have changed the outcome significantly.
Despite having several opportunities to score in the first half, players like Jennifer Echegini, Rasheedat Ajibade, Toni Payne, and Esther Okoronkwo failed to capitalize on them, leaving Nigeria vulnerable in the second half.
Coach Waldrum acknowledged that his team created many chances but couldn’t convert them into goals. He also mentioned that the weather conditions affected the players’ performance.

“In the match, we had numerous opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on, making it a challenging game for us to win.”
Waldrum reflected on the missed opportunities his team had during the game, mentioning they could have secured victory by halftime if they had been more efficient in front of the goal. He also noted that the hot weather during the match was a challenge but didn’t dwell on it, as the players were accustomed to such conditions.
Regarding his tactical decisions, Waldrum explained that he selected the best starting lineup for the home match but expressed confidence in all his players, regardless of who played.
In a surprising move, Waldrum opted to start Esther Okoronkwo instead of Asisat Oshoala, a forward from Bay FC. The decision proved beneficial as Okoronkwo, along with Juventus star Jennifer Echegini, contributed to the team’s victory with a decisive goal.
Despite some players being sidelined due to injuries, Waldrum remained optimistic about their recovery before the next game. He mentioned the importance of studying videos of their upcoming opponent, South Africa’s Bayana Bayana, to prepare adequately for their final round fixture in April.
