Bayero University Kano,BUK, will award honorary doctorate degrees to Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, for their contributions to education and youth development.
The awards will be given during the university’s 38th convocation ceremony at the New Campus in Kano.
The vice-chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, conveyed the approval of the award to Senator Barau Jibrin. The nomination recognizes Senator Barau Jibrin’s dedication to education and youth development, along with his efforts in providing scholarships, health projects, and various agricultural and empowerment programs in his constituency and beyond.

Senator Barau Jibrin has made significant contributions to national development, sponsoring 56 bills during his time in the Senate from 2015 to 2023. He was honored as the Best Northern Senator of the Year in 2017 by the Senate Press Corps.
Born in 1959 in Kabo, Kano State, Senator Barau began his political journey in 1999 during Nigeria’s return to democracy. He represented Tarauni Federal Constituency of Kano Central Senatorial District in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, where he chaired the Committee on Appropriations.
After his term in the House of Representatives, he returned to private practice. He became a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kano State when the party was formed in 2013. In 2015, he successfully contested and won the election for Kano North Senatorial District under the APC.

In the Senate, Senator Barau was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) after its inauguration in June 2015. He later became the chairman of the same committee, where he played a crucial role in legislative matters related to the petroleum sector.
In late 2016, Senator Barau was appointed as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETfund, where he served until the end of the 8th National Assembly. Due to his effective representation, he was re-elected by his constituents in 2019 for a second term and appointed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations because of his background in accounting.
Throughout his tenure, Senator Barau has been actively involved in representing the interests of the people, particularly in education, agriculture, and the economy. He served as the secretary of the Northern Senators Forum from 2016 to 2021, demonstrating his commitment to grassroots representation.
In 2023, he was re-elected for the third time by the people of Kano North Senatorial District. Upon the inauguration of the parliament on June 13, he was elected unopposed as the Deputy President of the Senate, with the endorsement of all his colleagues.
Currently, Senator Barau chairs the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, demonstrating his dedication to legislative reforms and national development.
