The decision on who will be the next coach of Nigeria’s senior national team is anticipated to dominate the Nigerian football scene. This follows the announcement by head coach Jose Peseiro that he is no longer leading the team.
The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, is currently in discussions with the coach regarding the extension of his contract. However, a disagreement over the coach’s monthly salary may hinder the possibility of an extension if they fail to reach a compromise by the end of this month.
A group of former Super Eagles players has already submitted their preferred candidate for the coaching job to the Minister for Sports, Senator John Enoh. This occurred before the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, as revealed exclusively by OwnGoalNigeria.com.
Before the AFCON, doubts surrounded extending Peseiro’s deal to cover the tournament period. A group of players led by Austine Eguavoen, Daniel Amokachi, and Sunday Oliseh met with the minister, proposing Emmanuel Amuneke as a suitable candidate to replace Peseiro in case he departs. The former Barcelona winger would be assisted by one of them, possibly Daniel Amokachi, who recently upgraded his coaching qualifications. The minister assured them that Amuneke would be considered when the position becomes vacant.

With the coaching position officially vacant, the NFF is facing mounting pressure, not from the minister, but from those advocating for the former Nigeria U17 and U20 coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, to get the job.
However, the football house’s primary focus is to extend Peseiro’s deal.
