Chelsea relieved some pressure on coach Mauricio Pochettino with a 3-2 home victory over fellow mid-table side Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday.
Cole Palmer, who has been one of the Blues’ standout performers this season, contributed by creating one goal and scoring another. In front of England manager Gareth Southgate, 21-year-old Palmer controlled the midfield for Chelsea. His 11th goal of the season marked him as the sixth Chelsea player to score in five consecutive league matches. Notably, Chelsea hasn’t lost a league game at home in March since 2001.
Chelsea’s Senegalese striker, Nicolas Jackson, redirected a Palmer shot past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the sixth minute. Despite Newcastle’s equalizer in the 43rd minute, when Alexander Isak scored with a curling strike, Chelsea remained resilient. Encouraged by their fans, especially after some discontent following a recent draw, Chelsea reclaimed the lead in the 57th minute. Palmer, Chelsea’s leading scorer this season, found the net from outside the box, securing a vital victory for the Blues.
In the 76th minute, substitute Mykhailo Mudryk extended Chelsea’s lead to 3-1 by weaving through Newcastle’s defense, evading Dubravka, and calmly slotting the ball into the net. Despite a powerful shot by Jacob Murphy in the 90th minute that gave Newcastle hope, Chelsea managed to maintain their lead until the final whistle.

The outcome narrowed the gap between Newcastle in 10th place and Chelsea in 11th to just one point, emphasizing the significance of the win for Chelsea. Newcastle faced further setback when their in-form winger, Anthony Gordon, sustained an injury and had to be substituted 10 minutes before half-time. Both Chelsea and Newcastle have struggled to meet the expectations of their wealthy owners, with Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe facing as much scrutiny as Chelsea’s Pochettino.
However, it was Pochettino who could exhale a sigh of relief after Monday’s match as the home supporters departed Stamford Bridge singing the chorus of Bob Marley’s song “Don’t worry about a thing,” indicating that many of them remain patient with Pochettino’s efforts to construct a team from his youthful yet expensive squad.
“We faced a very strong team with exceptional players, so it was a real challenge,” Pochettino commented to the BBC. “Securing the victory was important, but our focus remains on progress and moving forward. The most crucial aspect is securing the three points.”
“We’re constructing something unique, and it requires patience and acceptance. Today, the fans showed support, and we must continue to progress and stay resilient.”
Chelsea’s pursuit of silverware now rests solely on the FA Cup, with a quarterfinal match against second-tier Leicester City at home scheduled for Sunday. Meanwhile, Newcastle must regroup ahead of their own quarterfinal clash, an away fixture against Manchester City on Saturday.
Howe expressed frustration at Newcastle’s lapses in defense: “I thought we showed promise in many aspects of our performance tonight. However, conceding goals like we did, whether at home or away, makes it difficult to win matches. It’s as simple as that.”
