France is launching special flights to evacuate its “most vulnerable citizens” from Haiti in the midst of armed unrest, the French foreign ministry announced.

“Due to the suspension of commercial flights to Port-au-Prince, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, is opening special flights to allow the most vulnerable citizens to leave the country,” the ministry stated on X on Sunday.

The ministry further stated that despite the challenging situation, the French embassy in Port-au-Prince remains operational. The ongoing violence in the downtown area of Port-au-Prince erupted on February 29 while Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry was away in Kenya, seeking assistance to combat organized crime through the deployment of foreign forces in Haiti.

The gangs involved in the violence aimed to prevent the prime minister from returning to Haiti and seized control of several parts of the city, including storming Haiti’s largest prison and facilitating the escape of an undisclosed number of inmates. Consequently, the Haitian government declared a state of emergency in the capital region. On March 11, Prime Minister Henry announced his intention to resign once a transitional presidential council was established.
