Sunshine Stars FC and Sunshine Queens FC of Akure have emerged champions of 2024 Ondo State FA Cup in the male and female categories.

The matches played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure, on Saturday had Sunshine Queens defeating Onimarg FC 1-0 in the first encounter to win the female version of the FA Cup.

While Sunshine Stars Football Club also  defeated Adamimogo by 2-0 to lift the Ondo State FA Cup.

The FA Chairman in the State,  Dele Ajayi, appreciated the teams that participated in this edition of the competition.

Ajayi urged the teams to be good ambassadors of the state in the Federation Cup to be held later in the year.

“I am happy with the way the teams comported themselves throughout the competition.

“Today’s FA Cup competition is an annual event organised by the Nigeria Football Federation across the state football association.

“Each state will produce two clubs to represent their state at the federation level and winners of the tournament will represent Nigeria at the Continental level,” he said.

Ajayi said  that the Governor’s Cup competition had been resuscitated after many years of neglect due to financial difficulties, adding that the competition would start after the FA Cup which ended today.

The Medals and trophies were later presented to the winners of the competition and runners-up went home with medals.

In Ilorin, Kwara United Football Club  defeated Abubakar Bukola Saraki Football Club 2-1 to retain the State FA Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the match was played at the Pitch A of the Kwara Football Academy, Ilorin.

Two quick goals from Sadeeq Yusuf and Paul Samson in the 11th and 17th minutes , silenced ABS FC for the better part of the first half, only to regain their rythm in the second half.

Annafi Babatunde of ABS FC reduced the tally in the 48th minute to raise the hope of the Nigeria Nationwide League (NNL) of lifting the trophy.

NAN reports that Kwara United and Kwara ladies will represent the state in the Federation Cup competition.

Kwara Ladies United will represent the state in the female version of the national competition, being the only Female team registered in the state to participate in the competition.

While congratulating Kwara United for retaining the trophy, the General Manager of the club, Bashir Badawiy said that his team underrated ABS FC because they got two quick goals, but commended the players for winning the trophy again.

He said that team will go far in the national competition this year, in spite the anticipated challenges.

“We have the capacity and capability to go far in the competition this time around, and rewrite history.

“I want to thank the Fans, Supporters and the stakeholders for their support for the team,” Badawiy said.
