In swift response to the impeachment of Philip Shaibu, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced Omobayo Godwin as his chosen successor, marking a decisive move to fill the vacancy left by Shaibu’s removal from office as deputy governor.

Omobayo’s inauguration is set to take place on Monday at the Edo State Government House in Benin City.

Already, traditional rulers, friends and well-wishers have gathered at the inauguration venue for the swearing-in ceremony.

Credible News had earlier reported that Shaibu was impeached by the State Assembly on Monday.

Shaibu’s impeachment followed the adoption of the report of a seven-man committee set up by the chief judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa to investigate allegations of misconduct against the deputy governor, which he was found guilty of disclosing official secret.

The panel, however, exonerated the impeached deputy governor on the allegation of prejury as it was not “made up”, that is proven.

The house started the impeachment proceedings against Shaibu last week, 21 out of 24 lawmakers signed a petition to that effect.

Born July 19, 1986, the 37- year-old new deputy governor hails from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state.

Omobayo has a B.Eng Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Public Administration from the University of Benin, preparing for the role of a professional and an expert in public administration.

He is a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.

Before his new appointment, he served as a Senior Maintenance Engineer at Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, cutting his professional teeth in the operations in the South-South area, providing top-notch services and growing the business in the region.

He has also been active in politics in his local government, building bridges of trust with the people and mobilizing them for common causes, and breaking political barriers to the chagrin of his opponents.
