Tragedy struck again in Lagos as an LT 18-seater bus with the registration number FKJ 872 YA veered off the road and collided with the rails of the Third Mainland Bridge, resulting in two passengers being thrown into the lagoon and others sustaining injuries.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Akinola Adeniyi said the tragedy occured at around 11.30 am, when the commercial bus with passengers, enroute Iyana-Oworo to Island, suddenly hit the railing guiding the bridge.

Adeniyi attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding on the part of the driver of the ill-fated vehicle.

Rescue team, including men of the Lagos State Emergency Management LASEMA, the Police, among others raced to the scene for rescue mission.

The incident had led to traffic gridlock on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward the Island.

Southwest Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency,  Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said the crashed vehicle had been towed to Adeniji Adele police station.

In history instant report, he said: “Two fatal crashes involving an LT 18 SEATER registration number FKJ 872 YA occurred by Adeniyi Adele axis inward Lagos Island.

Director, Public Affairs of Lagos State Traffic Management Authourity, LASTMA, Taofik Adebayo, confirmed the incident saying LASTMA men, in collaboration with other rescue team, particularly, Marine Police, are currently carrying out rescue mission.

Adebayo said the seriously injured and rescued 18 passengers were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

“On a very high speed swerved off the road and hit bridge rails and caused the two passengers flung off into the lagoon

“The victims, a male adult and a female are being searched by the Marine Police” he added.
