The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has outlined key demands including improvements in welfare, increased university funding, and a halt to the expansion of new universities as members met with a government team.
On Wednesday, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman convened a critical meeting aimed at averting a potential nationwide strike and addressing security concerns within universities. The meeting, initially set for Monday but postponed, includes ASUU representatives led by President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, past ASUU presidents including former President Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, and senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Prof. Mamman emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing security in the education sector and assured that efforts will be made to keep students on campus. The meeting has since entered a closed-door session.
The potential strike follows ASUU’s recent resolution, made during their national executive council meeting at the University of Ibadan, which highlighted grievances over the Federal Government’s non-compliance with the 2009 re-negotiated agreement.
