At least 10 travelers have been reportedly abducted by sea pirates along the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterway, sparking concern among local communities and prompting swift action from security agencies.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, involved a group of 10 individuals traveling between Bonny Island and Port Harcourt.

While details remain sketchy, sources confirm that the travelers were intercepted by armed pirates during their journey.

Israel Pepple, the district Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Rivers State, confirmed the abduction during a phone interview.

“It’s not a rumor, it is real.

“10 persons have been kidnapped this morning coming from Bonny to Port Harcourt. We’ve reported to the security agencies,” Pepple stated.

In response to the incident, the Rivers State Police Command has assured the public that efforts are underway to secure the release of the abducted individuals.

The Police public relations officer confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has tasked Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations, DCP Olugbenga Adepoju, along with local Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, to lead the rescue operation.

As the situation develops, authorities are urging residents and maritime operators to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

The abduction highlights ongoing security challenges in the region’s waterways, which are crucial for transportation and commerce.
