The Niger State Police Command has confirmed an attack on MI Wushishi Estate in Minna by suspected illegal miners operating near the area.

The Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, noting that a distress call alerted authorities to a violent clash involving illegal miners, miscreants, and thugs, who had begun attacking homes within the estate.

In response, a police patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi Division was swiftly dispatched to the scene, where they successfully dispersed the attackers. Unfortunately, one individual, whose identity remains unknown, was killed during the attack and was later taken to the General Hospital morgue.

SP Abiodun assured the public that normalcy has been restored in the estate, with a police patrol team stationed in the area to prevent any further incidents. An investigation is currently underway to apprehend the suspects who fled the scene.

The attackers invaded the estate in large numbers, causing significant damage to vehicles, homes, and other properties, during hours when many residents were away at work.

The attack by the hoodlums follows the alleged killing of one of their members which the Estate residents claim they have openly threatened to avenge the death. This incident follows a recent ban by the Niger State Government on illegal mining activities, citing rising insecurity and environmental concerns.

The area, known for its rich deposits of solid minerals, particularly gold, has become a hotspot for illegal mining activities, making it increasingly susceptible to violent crimes.

Residents of the estate have expressed growing fears for their safety, with some choosing to relocate their families until security in the area is significantly improved.
