Uganda’s prominent opposition leader Bobi Wine has been reportedly seriously injured following a clash with police, as stated by his party, the National Unity Platform, NUP.

The incident occurred just outside Kampala, where the NUP alleges that Wine was shot in the leg in what they describe as a targeted attack.

In a social media statement, the NUP claimed that Wine was struck by gunfire when police and military personnel surrounded their vehicles and began firing live bullets, teargas canisters, and other projectiles. They assert that Wine was clearly targeted and that this incident represents a deliberate attempt on his life.

Local police, however, provided a different account, stating that Wine’s injury occurred when he stumbled while getting into a vehicle after his group blocked the road without permission. Police reports suggest that Wine’s group had been warned against organizing an event on the road, and the intervention was a response to prevent the procession. An investigation into the circumstances of the injury is underway.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was the main opposition candidate in Uganda’s 2021 presidential elections, where he lost to President Yoweri Museveni amidst allegations of electoral fraud and intimidation. The opposition leader has been subject to multiple arrests by Ugandan security forces, and he previously expressed fears for his safety in interviews.

Images shared by Wine on social media show him receiving medical treatment in a hospital for a bleeding injury on his shin. The NUP’s post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) and Wine’s own account both emphasize the severity of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation into the incident.
