Nigeria’s interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has made five significant changes to the Super Eagles’ starting lineup for today’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Benin Republic.
The encounter, taking place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, marks a crucial opportunity for Nigeria to avenge their recent 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs in June, which was their first competitive loss to Benin.
Eguavoen, who is in his fourth stint as head coach, has called upon players like Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong, who return after injury absences, to bolster the squad’s performance.
Despite Osimhen’s late arrival to training due to a transfer saga, he is expected to play a pivotal role in the attack alongside Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface.
Other key players, such as Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi, are also set to feature prominently.
The Super Eagles are determined to shake off a three-match winless streak and establish themselves as strong contenders in Group D of the qualifiers.
Eguavoen emphasized the importance of commitment and teamwork, saying: “Our objective is clear: to pick the six points in both matches. The players know this and are committed to accomplishing this.”
As the match kicks off at 5 PM local time, fans are eager to see if Nigeria can reclaim their dominance over Benin and secure a much-needed victory to boost their AFCON qualification hopes.
