The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda on Saturday launched a large-scale tree planting campaign in Daura aimed at combating the effects of climate change.

The initiative, which targets the planting of millions of trees across the state, seeks to curb desertification, restore degraded lands, and promote environmental sustainability.

The initiative, organised by the Katsina State Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape project in collaboration with the Ahmed Usman Pure Life Foundation, aimed at 10,000 tree seedlings across the nation, with 3,000 allocated to Daura.

The event held at Kangiwa Square, Daura Local Government Area of the state was attended by government officials including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahya and the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari.

Radda announced that 1,000 primary school pupils would each receive a tree seedling along with 5,000 naira as support for nurturing the trees to maturity.

He said: “This annual tree planting campaign is a crucial part of our strategy to address climate change in Katsina State.

“By involving our youth and providing them with the resources to care for these trees, we are investing in both our environment and our future generations.”

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Faruk expressed gratitude to the organisers for choosing Daura as the launch site just as he emphasized the importance of tree planting in preventing desert encroachment.

The Emir encouraged the people to actively participate in tree planting as well as nurturing.

The State Commissioner of Environment, Hamza Faskari, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Muntari Kado, said the ministry had raised and distributed over 3,000 tree seedlings across the State and assured that close supervision would be maintained to ensure at least 80% of the planted trees reach maturity.

He said: “Tree planting initiative was part of the efforts of the Katsina State Government to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development, setting a precedent for other states in the fight against climate change.”
