In a thrilling showdown at Arthur Ashe Stadium, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner triumphed over American Taylor Fritz in straight sets, securing a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory in the 2024 US Open final.
This win marks Sinner’s second Grand Slam title of the year, adding to his Australian Open victory earlier in January.
Sinner, the first Italian man to reach the US Open final, showcased his formidable skills throughout the match, dominating early and maintaining pressure on Fritz.
Despite a spirited effort from the 12th-seeded Fritz, who was aiming to end a 21-year drought for American men in Grand Slam finals, he struggled to find his rhythm until the latter stages of the match.
The match began with Sinner breaking Fritz’s serve in the very first game, setting the tone for a challenging encounter for the American. Although Fritz managed to break back and even led at one point in the first set, Sinner’s relentless play saw him take control, winning the last four games of the set.
Fritz fought valiantly, particularly in the third set, where he momentarily surged ahead 5-3. However, Sinner’s resilience shone through as he rallied to win the final four games, sealing the match and the championship.
In the post-match ceremony, Sinner praised Fritz’s journey and effort, acknowledging the hard work he has put into reaching such a significant stage. Fritz, while disappointed, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at this level and for the support from the crowd.
With this victory, Sinner not only solidifies his position as the top player in the world but also continues to build on what has been a remarkable year for the young Italian.
