In a significant move to strengthen regional ties, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to make his first foreign trip to neighboring Iraq on September 11. This visit marks a crucial diplomatic initiative for the Islamic Republic.

President Pezeshkian, who took office in July, will lead a high-ranking Iranian delegation to Baghdad, where he will meet with senior Iraqi officials, including Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The visit, at the invitation of the Iraqi premier, is aimed at bolstering cooperation and security agreements between the two countries.

The trip is particularly noteworthy as it follows the tragic death of former President Ebrahim Raisi, who had planned a similar visit before his untimely passing in May. The memoranda of understanding that were to be signed during Raisi’s visit will now be finalized during Pezeshkian’s trip, underscoring the continuity and importance of Iran-Iraq relations.

Iran and Iraq have enjoyed close ties since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, with Iran emerging as one of Iraq’s leading trade partners and wielding significant political influence in Baghdad. The upcoming visit is expected to further solidify these ties, with discussions focusing on security, economic cooperation, and trade.

Pezeshkian’s commitment to strengthening relations with neighboring countries aligns with his broader foreign policy agenda, which emphasizes regional cooperation and stability. This visit to Iraq is seen as a key step in this direction, reflecting Iran’s strategic interests in the region.

The visit also highlights Iraq’s role as a mediator in regional conflicts, particularly in light of recent tensions in the Middle East. Iraq’s efforts to distance itself from potential escalations and its desire to bolster its role as an interlocutor for contact with Iran are significant factors in the timing and importance of this visit.

As Pezeshkian prepares for his maiden foreign trip, the international community is watching closely, given the geopolitical implications of this visit and the potential for deeper cooperation between Iran and Iraq.
